Guided Learning Pathway Two
From Idea to Evidence
How to test assumptions, investigate real needs and discover what a promising idea can credibly become.

The central question
What evidence does your idea need next?
By following this pathway, you should better understand:
- Why an unfinished idea is not necessarily weak
- How to identify the assumptions underneath it
- How to investigate needs without leading people
- Why attention is not the same as demand
- How evidence can support progress, adaptation or a stop
How to use this pathway
Bring one real idea with you. Follow the stages in order, make brief notes and answer each reflection question. The purpose is not to prove the idea is good; it is to discover what the evidence genuinely supports.
01Stage 1
Give the unfinished idea room
Begin without demanding premature certainty. A promising idea needs definition, but also enough openness to change.
Apply it to your ideaWhat is already clear about your idea—and what is still genuinely unfinished?
02Stage 2
Make assumptions visible
Every idea contains beliefs about people, value, delivery and demand. Progress begins when those beliefs can be named.
Apply it to your ideaWhich assumption would cause the idea to fail if it proved untrue?
03Stage 3
Investigate real needs
Move outside the idea itself and learn from the people, behaviours and circumstances it is intended to serve.
Apply it to your ideaWhat could you ask about past behaviour without encouraging the answer you hope to hear?
04Stage 4
Test value, not applause
Attention and encouragement can be useful, but they do not automatically demonstrate demand, participation or viability.
Apply it to your ideaWhat behaviour would count as stronger evidence than praise, interest or follower numbers?
05Stage 5
Decide what the evidence supports
Bring the findings together without forcing them to justify the original idea. Evidence may support progress, adaptation, a smaller test or a deliberate stop.
Apply it to your ideaWhat is the smallest credible next test—and what result would change your direction?
Closing reflection
Turn learning into a testable next step.
01What problem is the idea responding to?
02Whose behaviour do you need to understand?
03What is your most consequential assumption?
04What is evidence—and what is only belief?
05What is the smallest useful next test?
Your next step
Test the idea before expanding it.
