They Told Me I Couldn’t.
Music for Resilience, Defiance and Becoming
There are moments when the most consequential voice in a person’s life is the one that says: You can’t.
You are not ready. You are not good enough. People like you do not do this. It is too late. It is unrealistic. It will never work.
But sometimes resistance becomes fuel.
Why this collection
From doubt to possibility.
Inspired by the discovery of Jaxson Blue’s “They Told Me I Couldn’t,” this Cultural Intelligence Studio collection brings together ten full-length songs about perseverance, self-belief, adversity, ambition and the decision to continue when circumstances—or other people—suggest that you should stop.
These are not simply songs about success. They explore different stages of the journey towards it: struggle, doubt, endurance, resistance, recovery, courage and becoming.
Companion long-form essay
Possibility, permission and the decision to continue.
The collection’s ten songs now connect to an original Cultural Intelligence Studio essay about doubt, resistance, evidence, resilience and becoming—moving the experience from motivation into cultural and strategic intelligence.

Hall of Fame
Theme: Possibility · Ambition · Achievement
A song built around the proposition that extraordinary achievement begins with believing that extraordinary achievement is possible.
The accompanying film reinforces the idea through people working towards difficult goals—including a boxer and a hearing-impaired dancer. The Script’s own website lists the full video, while contemporary coverage confirms the video’s achievement-focused narrative.

Rise Up
Theme: Resilience · Care · Perseverance
“Rise Up” brings a different emotional register to the collection.
This is not resilience presented as invulnerability. It recognises exhaustion, difficulty and the effort sometimes required simply to continue.
The full official Inspiration Version was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and published through Andra Day’s official artist channel.
C.I.S. reflectionResilience does not necessarily mean never falling. Sometimes it means deciding to rise once more.

Superheroes
Theme: Adversity · Transformation · Strength
One of the closest companions to “They Told Me I Couldn’t.”
“Superheroes” considers what can happen when somebody repeatedly underestimated by the world converts struggle into strength. The complete official video is published on The Script’s official artist channel.
C.I.S. reflectionThe experiences that challenge us can sometimes become part of the capabilities that distinguish us.

Rise
Theme: Determination · Pressure · Persistence
“Rise” explores determination under pressure.
Its significance to this collection lies in the difference between appearing powerful and becoming powerful. The visual metaphor is struggle itself: repeated difficulty followed by another attempt.
C.I.S. reflectionWhat if difficulty is not always evidence that we should stop—but information about what we need to become capable of doing?

Fight Song
Theme: Self-belief · Agency · Starting Again
Sometimes the person who has to believe first is you.
“Fight Song” captures the moment when external validation becomes less important than recovering one’s own sense of agency.
Sony Music identifies the song as Platten’s first UK No. 1 and links the official video.
C.I.S. reflectionBefore other people recognise an idea, project or person, somebody may have to continue believing in its possibility without their permission.

The Champion
Theme: Courage · Discipline · Achievement
A high-energy celebration of persistence, courage and the mentality required to keep pursuing difficult goals.
C.I.S. reflectionAchievement is visible. The discipline, repetition, rejection and uncertainty that preceded it usually are not.
Playback begins only when you choose. No music or sound autoplays.

Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)
Theme: Recovery · Independence · Strength
Where some songs in this collection concern the struggle itself, “Stronger” considers what can exist on the other side of it.
The experience has happened. The difficulty was real. But it does not have to have the final word.
C.I.S. reflectionSometimes progress is not returning to who you were before disruption. It is discovering who you can become afterwards.

Survivor
Theme: Survival · Independence · Forward Movement
“Survivor” adds another important dimension: continuing after circumstances have changed.
Its declaration is not that adversity never happened. It is that adversity does not automatically acquire ownership of what happens next.
C.I.S. reflectionSurvival can be more than endurance. It can become the beginning of a different future.
Playback begins only when you choose. No music or sound autoplays.

I Won’t Back Down
Theme: Conviction · Resistance · Integrity
Musically and lyrically economical, but exceptionally clear in its central proposition: there are moments when continuing requires deciding what you will not surrender.
C.I.S. reflectionKnowing what you refuse to abandon can sometimes be as strategically important as knowing where you want to go.
Playback begins only when you choose. No music or sound autoplays.

The Climb
Theme: Journey · Learning · Persistence
The collection ends not with victory, but with the journey.
That distinction matters.
“The Climb” reframes obstacles as part of development rather than interruptions to it. Not every difficult journey ends exactly where we imagined. But the person making the journey may still be changed by attempting it.
C.I.S. reflectionWhat if progress should sometimes be measured not only by where we arrive, but by what we learn and become while getting there?
Playback begins only when you choose. No music or sound autoplays.

A movement from resistance to possibility.
There is a deeper cultural question underneath this collection.
Who gets encouraged to believe that extraordinary things are possible?
Not everyone encounters ambition from the same starting point.
Class, race, gender, disability, geography, education, money, networks, representation and access can influence whose ambitions are encouraged, whose expertise is recognised and whose ideas are initially considered credible.
That is why resilience should never become an excuse for ignoring structural barriers.
People should not have to overcome unnecessary exclusion simply to demonstrate that they are capable.
But neither should existing barriers be mistaken for evidence that change is impossible.
Sometimes somebody tells you that you cannot. Sometimes circumstances appear to agree with them. And sometimes the most consequential decision is simply:
Continue.
